A COMPLETE RESTORATION

Spella Farm

The challenge

This project had to be planned and executed with meticulous attention to detail, because all the buildings are 19th Century and Grade II Listed. The farmhouse has been re-designed and extended to link it to all the outbuildings, and one of the barns has been converted into a one-bedroom cottage.

Typical features of these period buildings are low ceilings and exposed beams; and on the top floors, sloping walls with Velux-style windows. Both technically and aesthetically, these factors tend to limit the choice of lighting.

We were engaged by our clients early on, which allowed a proper discussion of the relative merits of particular fittings in specific locations. It also allowed us to realise a balance between the required light levels for each space, and fittings that would achieve the elegant and harmonious lighting effects our clients were seeking.

Our solution

Wall lights predominate throughout the building and there has been only a limited use of spotlights. Accent lighting is provided through table and/or standard lamps to offer different effects. Many of the rooms have a 5A dedicated circuit so they can be controlled by a wall switch.

As independent lighting designers we were able to identify a diverse range of lighting options for our client to consider. We agreed that the focus should be as much on manufacturing quality as the style and types of lights needed. The final choices enhance the interiors and accentuate the space, while adding to the comfort and style of this elegant home.

A range of possibilities

As independent lighting designers we were able to identify a diverse range of lighting options for our clients to consider. And being engaged by them early in the project allowed a proper discussion of the relative merits of particular fittings in specific locations.

What our clients said

“Lighting is the most important aspect of the interior, yet it is so easy to get wrong. Getting Lampholder’s expert advice and help has made such a difference to the look and feel of the house. Investing in the lighting was one of the best things we did.”

Easy control

To achieve the different lighting effects our clients wanted many of the rooms have a 5A dedicated circuit so all the table lights can be easily controlled by a wall switch.
