When St. Oswald’s Parish Church in Ashbourne, Derbyshire was completely re-wired, Lampholder Lighting Design produced a new, flexible lighting scheme that pays equal attention to the electronics and the aesthetics.
The church is renowned for its fine architecture and beautiful monuments but many of the interior details were hard to see. Our scheme provides a consistent level of illumination throughout the building. New powerful uplighters reveal the Chancel’s fine painted ceiling and other notable features – such as the Boothby Chapel – are enhanced by accent lighting.
We created a new control system, which offers different pre-set programmes that can be used depending on what is happening in the church and adjusted for the time of year. Our scheme also includes motion detectors and new emergency lighting, and has addressed energy efficiency and maintenance concerns.
This project required meticulous planning and was timed around the many church activities. The electrical work was managed one section at a time, with only two short periods when the church needed to be closed.
