A country kitchen

Facing west, our clients’ large, low-ceilinged kitchen needed lights on for most of the day. It was also difficult to work in because the lighting scheme produced heavy shadows, dark corners or glare. A kitchen refurbishment was the chance for a rethink.

Our solution

Reducing the frequency of bulb changes and a 40% electricity saving are just two key outcomes of Lampholder’s new lighting scheme. But the more visible achievement is distinct, effective lighting for cooking, entertaining and relaxing; and good background light to boost the darker end of the room.

The room has three entrances, so flexible switching was essential. After detailed discussions about how the kitchen would be used, the new scheme works for every situation and six switched lighting circuits give total flexibility.

Wow factor has been created with clever task lighting over the Aga, which sits in the enormous, original beamed fireplace. A rise and fall pendant light, with dimmable lamp, over the kitchen table adapts for every occasion.

Two 36 watt linear fluorescents on top of cupboards wash background light across the ceiling, while the main food preparation area is lit by four—adjustable—recessed CFL spotlights. Extra task lighting is provided by table lamps on the worktops.
